How to install UT3 mods on PS3 and PC

PS3 Installation

What You Need

  • USB flash drive (FAT32 formatted)
  • Any of the 372 mods with a working download in the archive — no jailbreak, no custom firmware
  • Unreal Tournament 3 (BLUS30086) for PS3
  • A computer to download mod files

First: which version of the game do you have?

The steps differ, and you can tell in a few seconds. Launch Unreal Tournament 3 and open Community from the main menu:

  • If the menu shows Mod Browser, you are on version 2.0 or later. Use Method 1 below.
  • If it shows My Content instead, you are on a version older than 2.0. Use Method 2 below.

Update 2.0 replaced My Content with the Mod Browser — it is the same slot in the menu, not an extra entry. If you have a UT3 Black Edition disc, version 2.0 and the Titan Pack are already on it.

Method 1 — version 2.0 and later (Mod Browser)

  1. Download the mod file — Download the USERDATA.JAM file from the mod page. You can do this on a PC, phone, or even directly from the PS3's built-in browser.
  2. Place USERDATA.JAM at the root of your USB drive:
    USB Drive/
      USERDATA.JAM
No subfolders — the file sits directly in the root of the drive.
  3. Plug the USB drive into your PS3 and launch Unreal Tournament 3.
  4. Go to: Community → Mod Browser
  5. Press Square for IMPORT CONTENT and select the mod. Once installed it appears under INSTALLED CONTENT on the same screen. (Cross = DOWNLOAD CONTENT, Circle = BACK, Select = DELETE ALL.)
On version 2.0 and later you can skip the USB entirely for the mods in our in-game list — the same screen has an AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD section that downloads straight to the console. See the Mod Browser guide.

Method 2 — before version 2.0 (My Content)

Older copies of the game look for the file in a specific folder, not at the drive root, and import it from a different menu.

  1. Download the mod's USERDATA.JAM file.
  2. Create this exact folder path on the USB drive:
    USB Drive/
      PS3/
        SAVEDATA/
          BLUS30086-MODIMPORT/
            USERDATA.JAM
Folder names are case-sensitive — all uppercase, with the hyphen.
  3. Plug the USB drive into your PS3 and launch Unreal Tournament 3.
  4. Go to: Community → My Content → Import Mod
  5. Select the mod and import it. Done!
Worth updating. Version 2.0 improved mod compatibility on PS3 and added the Mod Browser. After that, the free Titan Pack update (2.1) adds the Greed and Betrayal gametypes — without it those tabs do not appear at all. Both are free updates. If you would rather not update, Method 2 keeps working.

IMPORTANT: The USB drive must be FAT32 formatted. Most USB drives come pre-formatted as FAT32. If yours isn't, you'll need to reformat it (this erases all data on the drive). exFAT will NOT work — PS3 requires FAT32.

Why two paths? Older guides reference PS3/SAVEDATA/BLUS30086-MODIMPORT/USERDATA.JAM. That is not wrong — it is the correct path for copies of the game older than version 2.0, which is Method 2 above. Version 2.0 moved mod installs to the USB root and replaced the My Content menu with the Mod Browser. Both routes still work on the hardware they belong to.

Extract a USERDATA.JAM — see the files inside →

Open any UT3 PS3 mod file in your browser and download the contents as a ZIP. Runs locally — your file never leaves your device.

Method B — the in-game Mod Browser (no PC, no USB)

Since August 2, 2026, Unreal Tournament 3's built-in Mod Browser works again. Your PS3 downloads and installs mods by itself — no PC, no USB drive, no modified console. It needs one DNS change, the same one that restores online play.

The trade-off: the in-game list is a curated shortlist, because the console's download screen is a single long scroll with no search. The USB method above reaches every mod in the archive.

How to use the in-game Mod Browser →

PC Installation

  1. Download the PC mod file (usually a .zip or .ut3 file).
  2. Extract the contents if it's a .zip file.
  3. Place files in your UT3 directory:
    Documents/My Games/Unreal Tournament 3/Published/
  4. Launch UT3 — the mod should appear in the appropriate menu.

Advanced methods — loose files in the DLC folder

The two methods below — jailbroken PS3 and the RPCS3 emulator — share the same idea: the game reads mods from a per-mod folder inside its DLC folder, and that DLC folder only exists once the official UT3 DLC is installed. Mods are distributed as a USERDATA.JAM bundle — extract it first with our USERDATA.JAM extractor to get the loose files: the mod's .xxx packages plus a PS3-UTGame.ini. Both methods use the same layout:

…/USRDIR/DLC/<ModName>/  ← the .xxx files + PS3-UTGame.ini go here

Region note: BLES00200 = PAL/EU disc; the US disc is BLUS30086 — adjust the game-id in the paths below for your region.

Official pkg downloads — still on Sony's servers

Epic's official UT3 packages are still being served by Sony's own content network — the original files, untouched since 2008. We don't host or mirror them; these links go straight to the source:

  • UT3 DLC bonus pack (82 MB) — the FacingWorlds / Searchlight / Morbias pack; this is what creates the DLC folder. No license file (.rap) needed — it self-licenses. EU / BLES00200 · US / BLUS30086
  • v2.0 game updateEU / BLES00200 (111 MB, SHA-1 3c9d188b…) · US / BLUS30086 (92 MB, SHA-1 b186cae6…)
  • Titan Pack (v2.1) (552 MB) — not needed for mods, but adds the Greed and Betrayal gametypes. Requires v2.0 first. EU / BLES00200 · US / BLUS30086

Sony's 2008-era download servers speak plain HTTP only, so your browser may warn about an insecure download — choose "keep" and check the file size matches. Match the pkg region to your game: BLES00200 = PAL/EU, BLUS30086 = US.

On a standard (non-jailbroken) PS3

A stock console can't install .pkg files from USB — there's no package installer on official firmware; the pkg links above are for jailbroken consoles and RPCS3. But a standard PS3 doesn't need them, because the official routes still work:

  • Game update (v2.0): launch UT3 while connected to the internet and accept the update prompt — the console downloads it from these same Sony servers, which still answer today.
  • DLC bonus pack & Titan Pack: both are free on the PlayStation Store on the console (search "Unreal Tournament 3"), or under Account Management → Download List if you've grabbed them before. Do it while you can — the PS3 store closes region by region between August 2026 and July 2027.

Jailbroken PS3 — PS3HEN or CFW (manual FTP)

On a jailbroken console (PS3HEN or custom firmware) you can bypass the import screen entirely and place a mod's files on the hard drive yourself over FTP. Mods are distributed as a USERDATA.JAM bundle; the game reads the extracted files from a per-mod folder inside its DLC folder.

  1. Initialize the DLC folder first (one time) — install the official free UT3 DLC bonus pack: install its .pkg through your PS3's package manager. Without it, the game has no DLC folder and mods aren't seen. Grab the pkg straight from Sony's servers — EU / BLES00200 or US / BLUS30086 (82 MB, no .rap needed — see the official downloads list above).
  2. Extract the mod's USERDATA.JAM with our USERDATA.JAM extractor to get its loose files — the .xxx packages and its PS3-UTGame.ini.
  3. FTP into the PS3 and drop the files in as a per-mod subfolder:
    /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00200/USRDIR/DLC/<ModName>/
containing the mod's .xxx files + its PS3-UTGame.ini. (US disc: swap BLES00200 for BLUS30086.)
  4. Reboot UT3 — the map appears in-game, under the mode matching its prefix (DM-, CTF-, VCTF-, WAR-).

RPCS3 emulator (PC/Mac) — no console needed

What You Need

IMPORTANT: The in-game Mod Browser does not work under RPCS3 — neither its downloads nor IMPORT CONTENT (from USB or a virtual USB drive), because the emulator doesn't implement the PS3 mod-import call (cellStorageDataImport). Use this manual method instead.
  1. Initialize the DLC folder (one time) — In RPCS3 go to File → Install Packages and select the official UT3 DLC package (content-ID EP0178-BLES00200_00-UNREALTOUR3DLC01 — the FacingWorlds / Searchlight / Morbias bonus pack; download it straight from Sony's servers, 82 MB — that's the EU pkg matching a BLES00200 dump; a US / BLUS30086 dump takes the US pkg instead. See the official downloads list above). This creates the DLC folder at USRDIR/DLC/. No .rap needed — the pkg self-licenses. The "Integrity check completed! / Error parsing 'PSN DLC' DB" message is harmless.
  2. Add the mod — extract its USERDATA.JAM with our USERDATA.JAM extractor, then place the folder at
    dev_hdd0/game/BLES00200/USRDIR/DLC/<ModName>/
with its .xxx files + PS3-UTGame.ini, next to the ___EPICDLC_1 folder from Step 1. (To find RPCS3's dev_hdd0: right-click UT3 in the game list → Open Folder, or look under the RPCS3 folder on Windows / ~/Library/Application Support/rpcs3/ on macOS.)
  3. Relaunch UT3 → Instant Action → the mode matching the map's prefix. The map is listed.

Troubleshooting

Having trouble? Here are solutions to the most common issues PS3 modders encounter:

"No mod found" or mod doesn't appear in Import Mod

This is almost always a folder structure issue. The PS3 is very strict about the exact path. Double-check:

  • The folder must be PS3 (not "ps3" or "Ps3" — all uppercase)
  • Inside PS3: SAVEDATA (all uppercase, one word)
  • Inside SAVEDATA: BLUS30086-MODIMPORT (all uppercase with hyphen)
  • On version 2.0 or later this folder is wrong — the JAM belongs at the root of the drive instead. Check your Community menu: Mod Browser means 2.0+, My Content means older.
  • The file must be named exactly USERDATA.JAM
  • Make sure there are no extra folders — USERDATA.JAM should be directly inside BLUS30086-MODIMPORT

PS3 doesn't recognize the USB drive

The PS3 only reads FAT32-formatted drives. If your USB drive isn't detected:

  • Check the format: Right-click the drive on your PC, select Properties, and look at File System. It must say FAT32.
  • Reformat if needed: On Windows, right-click → Format → select FAT32. On Mac, use Disk Utility → Erase → MS-DOS (FAT).
  • Large drives (64 GB+): Windows may not offer FAT32 for drives over 32 GB. Use a free tool like Rufus or FAT32 Format to format larger drives.
  • Try a different port: The PS3 has multiple USB ports — try each one.
  • Try a different drive: Some USB 3.0 drives have compatibility issues with the PS3's USB 2.0 ports. Older, simpler USB drives tend to work best.

Mod imports but doesn't work in-game

If a mod imports successfully but doesn't appear in menus or causes issues: (1) Make sure you're looking in the right place — maps appear in the map browser, characters in character select under specific factions, mutators in the mutator menu. (2) Some mods require specific game modes to be selected first. (3) Try restarting UT3 after importing. (4) If the mod crashes the game, the file may be corrupted — try re-downloading it from UT3MOD.COM.

Map missing after a DLC-folder install (jailbroken PS3 / RPCS3)

For the jailbroken PS3 and RPCS3 methods, if the map doesn't show up:

  • Map missing = wrong folder. It must be USRDIR/DLC/<ModName>/ — NOT USRDIR/UNREALENGINE3/DLC/ (unused) and NOT …/UTGAME/COOKEDPS3/ (stock maps only).
  • The DLC folder must exist first — install the official free UT3 DLC once (Step 1 of the jailbroken / RPCS3 method).
  • Fully quit and relaunch — the map list is built at startup.
  • Check the mode — a map only appears under its prefix's mode (DM- = Deathmatch, CTF- = Capture the Flag, VCTF- = Vehicle CTF, WAR- = Warfare).
  • Check the .ini — each mod needs its own PS3-UTGame.ini with a [<Map> UTUIDataProvider_MapInfo] section whose MapName matches the .xxx package name.

How to delete/remove an imported mod

To remove a mod you've already imported: Launch UT3, go to Community → Mod Browser (or Community → My Content on versions older than 2.0), find the mod in the list, select it, and choose Delete. This removes the mod from your PS3's hard drive. You can always re-import it later from your USB drive.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Keep your USB drive handy — Keep a drive set up the way your game version expects — USERDATA.JAM at the root for version 2.0 and later, or the PS3/SAVEDATA/BLUS30086-MODIMPORT folder for older copies — and you can swap mods in seconds.
  • Organize your downloads — Create a "UT3 Mods" folder on your computer and save downloaded USERDATA.JAM files with descriptive names (e.g., "DM-Deck17-USERDATA.JAM"). This way you can re-import them anytime.
  • Try mutators with custom maps — Mutators work with any map, including modded ones. Low gravity + a tall deathmatch map = instant fun.
  • Play with bots — UT3's bots provide challenging opponents offline. Set bot count and difficulty in match settings for a great solo or split-screen experience.
  • Take it online — Epic's official servers have been gone since 2014, but the community brought PS3 multiplayer back. One DNS change on the console reaches six servers running 24/7, and since July 2026 you can host your own match for players anywhere in the world to join. See the Play Online guide.
